There’s no sense in denying the fact that this sweater appeals to my kindergarten aesthetic. It totally looks like something my mom would have worn with leather pants… in the eighties. Impulse buy. I was this close to tossing it onto a heaping consignment pile, when I decided to try it on (for kicks) with these comfy, cropped Alexander Wang “T-Shirt” trousers.
Since I started working with kids, I’ve been inspired to dress more playfully. Can you blame me? The more time I spend with them, the more I enjoy them. They’re immensely entertaining after all! I realize that sartorial selection should not be foremost in my mind when teaching, but I refuse to fall in with the khaki/clogs/sweater set crew. Instead, I want to be like my third grade teacher whose laid back, beachy chic style I so admired (white linen, bold prints, and a gold toe ring). Don’t expect to see me sporting kaftans any time soon, but do expect me to continue cultivating a distinct (teacher) flair that my students might easily recall 20+ years later.
