The Met Gala

May 9, 2012

AKA, my favorite red carpet event of the year!

For those of you who are not in the know, it’s the fashion industries’ Oscar equivalent (See: Costume Institute Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art)… only the gowns are a bit bolder, more exciting, and downright glamorous. This year’s exhibit showcases the work of two fantabulous Italian designers (slash artisans): Elsa Schiaparelli (deco era), and Miuccia Prada (no intro required). Needless to say, heavy homage was paid to said designers, and the results are simply breathtaking.

Here are my top picks for 2012 (this was not, I repeat, not an easy task as there were so many gorgeous looks to choose from):

The lovely, and amazing Carey Mulligan (this year’s chair) in, you guessed it, Prada. Love, love, love this look from head to toe, but then again I’ve ever met a paiette I didn’t like. ;-)

Christina Ricci in Thakoon. I have no words for the amazingness that is this dress. It looks like something my favorite Barbie would have worn circa ’89.

Karolina Kurkova in a rose gold sequined Rachel Zoe gown (and head piece). Can you say Old Hollywood glam? She looks like she’s walking the red carpet in 1941. Ja’mazing. Ja’dore.

Isabel Lucas looking fierce in a peacock themed Proenza Schouler ensemble. Is it just me, or does she actually look comfortable? And her hair. I die. This is a shorter version of what I’ve been desperately trying to achieve for the past week.

Greta Gerwig in Prabal Gurung. Stunning. I so want to have my LA tailor make something similar for me someday. Fo realz, yo.

Beyonce werrrrkking her killer post-baby bod in this swoon worthy Givenchy number. How ridic is the feathered hemline.

Kate Bosworth in Prada. So, so sexy, and playful, and polished. The bun, and the lipstick are perfection.

Honorable Mentions:

Mary-Kate wearing, dun, dun, dun… The Row. Although the orange tint of her skin scares me a bit, I’m really digging the dress, and I love the fact that she felt confident enough to attend a black tie event with that updo. It’s reminiscent of my post-workout/post-beach day hair. If I’m ever running late…

Elizabeth Banks in London “it” designer Mary Katrantzou’s bold & beautiful creation. I luuuvvv the mixed prints, and the peplum.

Look at Miss Lena Dunham looking all chic, and made up! I really am obsessed with this ‘Girl.’

And here you have my honestly WTF? fashion moment:

Anja, you are obscenely beautiful, and I have enjoyed watching you strut the catwalks for years now, but come on! What is this, and how is your hoo not exposed.

Well, there you have it, my humble commentary on this year’s Met Gala.

Happy Wednesday!
